Both “Salford Art Olympics Flyers” These are based on the Posters.
(For more info read the poster details!)
The idea for the Poster was again to follow the theme of The olympics.
So I used a similar Layout to that of the Offical London Olympics 2012 posters which where all created by various artists/desginers, and after some research the layout was simply a massive image with some info at the bottom (Refer back to pervious posts regarding Olympic Posters)
So now with the logo done the layout was simple, all i was stuck on was the massive image itself. So then i thought back to what i did with my Logo, took something very “Olympic 2012” flipped in on its head and turned it arty.
So the best way to go with this was to use some images of famous olympians, turn the colour into a greyish colour used on the logo to universally symbolise art, then flip the actual olympians on there heads and make them look arty.
Strangely I’m quiet glad that you can tell the olympians have been messed with (Added paintbrushes and portfolio cases Ect) because i want people to look at the poster and think, some artist has messed with that Olympic image and turned it more arty.
I wanted to take two sports as the images, so obviously i wanted to use my 2 favourite olympic sports - Boxing and Running.
The Boxing Poster -
I wanted this to look like these boxers where messing around with paints, and rather than it look like boxing it looks like they are fighting over a paint brush/fighting with paint. This kind of image is also visually striking and i hope to reel people in with the initial shock of the image, before they obviously see how its been “Messed with”.
The Running Poster -
This idea came to me quiet easily, the only time some one in the art business needs to run is when they need to make a deadline, so you get the initial image of the guy running and as you look closer he’s got a “Salford Art Olympics” logo on his chest. Whats best is that the flyer with this image is tailored to the Industry night, so it looks like the guy is running with the portfolio either for/to get to the Salford Art Olympics, like trying to make a dead line.
Brand The Show Logo-
The Theme for the branding of the Show is the Olympics as it is a massive event going on in britain and is easily recognisable due to its own themes, ect.
So to follow the london fashion i created a logo similar to the Official London 2012 logo, except i used a different set of colours and shapes. Im quiet happy with how its turned out, you can tell by some of its shape that its the london 2012 logo, but due to the added arty effects you then see that its the “Salford Art Olympics Logo.”
Whilst creating the logo i stubbled with finding a colour that symbolised all of art, like the olympics its colours help symbolise different Sports.
But with this been an Art Exhibition, i really wanted to further connect the art subjects through use of one Colour, this greyish colour is found in almost every piece of art work. To me it reminds me of a pencil colour, which obviously is vital to all people in the art industry..or a pen.
These Smaller Kinds of poster where done using some Silhouetted Characters i created in my Sketchbook, they looked effective so i scanned them and put them into a poster format. The General Idea was that the character themselves would look quiet watery due to the water colours used, then i would follow the same format as i did with the previous rain poster. My only Criticism is that the Grey fade isn’t as effective as i hoped, i used it to try and embody Britain and its grey skys..but maybe a greyish blue would have been better and more visually eye catching.
Here is the Original Design for the Rain Poster. I the idea was to truly bring out how british the rain can be, through use of the English flag as a form of shadow, and the use of the Silhouette Lady to bring through more kinds of Beauty.
London Olympic/Paralympic 2012 Offical Poster Designs.
Artists (Starting From The First Poster) -
- Anthea Hamilton
- Briget Riley
- Howard Hodgkin
- Micheal Craig Martin
- Chris Ofili + Bob and Roberta Smith
My Personal Favorite of the designs is the Go Poster by Micheal Craig Martin, im a big fan of the color useage and the illustrative style itself. Im also quite seen on the Love Poster by Bob and Robeta Smith, mainly due to the painted effect + Bright bold colors used.

Pictogram Research -Different Color Meanings.
I wanted to look further into what different colors mean, in particular focusing on the olympic colors i plan to use for my own pictograms.
- Purple
Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.
According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors. Purple is a very rare color in nature; some people consider it to be artificial.
Relevent Sport Pictograms in the London 2012 Olympics: Archery,Football,Shooting,Tennis,Cycleing Road - These all seem to be shooting or direct sports, i will see how to link this to a course later.
- Blue
Blue is the color of the sky and sea (SEA=WATER SHOWN IN PREVIOUS POST!). It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.
Relevent Sport Pictograms in the London 2012 Olympics:Diving,Rowing,Cannoeing,Sailing,Weight Lifting - These all seem to be wet sports or sports to do with water..and i suppose with weight lifting that could link in with the more simple weight lifing motion or perhaps to do with perspiration.. I will see how to link this to a course later.
- Orange
Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.
To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Relevent Sport Pictograms in the London 2012 Olympics:Fenceing,Boxing,Judo,Table Tennis,Wrestleing - These all seem to be heavy or the more extreme (in terms of movement and engery) sports of the olympics, and the reason they are useing this is becuase red is too bold/agressive a colour to use and orange is just below it it in the colour scale..clever, I will see how to link this to a course later.
- Pink
I havent found much on pink. Pink is a difficult color, alongside Purple its one of the pirmary colors used in the olympics, but i feel its quite close in terms of meaning to purple itself.
Relevent Sport Pictograms in the London 2012 Olympics:Hockey,Basketball,Trampoline,Badminton,Handball- Im not sure about these, pink is qutie a calm but powerful color, and maybe that emboides these sports, however hockey has contact in it..will have to think on that colour.
